Week 29 - Eternal Life

Theme:

Time and eternity were united by Jesus. His life showed how the Eternal One takes shape within the time that we, as humans, experience.

What I may wish to ask:

To feel the power of the Eternal God within me.

That my life may take the form of a life that lasts forever.

That I may dare to trust in eternal love.

Welcome to this Friday evening meditation.

To fully engage in this meditation, I sit as comfortably as possible, take a few deep breaths in, and slowly exhale. Once my mind becomes quiet, I sense in the silence the presence of the loving God who gazes at me with compassion.

Luke 23: 32 – 33

Two other men, both criminals, were also led out with Him to be executed. When they came to the place called the Skull, they crucified Him there, along with the criminals – one on His right, the other on His left.

I imagine myself present as the three death sentences are carried out before my eyes through crucifixion. I hear and see everything happening around me. I notice the weeping women, the disciples, and the followers of Jesus, as well as the opponents of Jesus, the Pharisees, the scribes, passers-by, and heavily armed Roman soldiers maintaining order. What does all this stir within me?

Luke 23: 39 -42

One of the criminals who hung there hurled insults at Him: ‘Aren’t you the Messiah? Save yourself and us!’ But the other criminal rebuked him. ‘Don’t you fear God,’ he said, ‘since you are under the same sentence? We are punished justly, for we are getting what our deeds deserve. But this man has done nothing wrong.’ Then he said, ‘Jesus, remember me when You come into Your kingdom.’

I hear the criminal ask Jesus not to forget him when He enters His kingdom. How does that affect me?

Luke 23: 43

Jesus answered him, ‘Truly I tell you, today you will be with me in paradise.’

Jesus offers us eternal life. What exactly does that look like? Jesus gives no concrete description. It remains a mystery, shrouded in promises. What do I actually imagine when I think of eternal life?
