Week 11 - The Incarnation

Welcome to this guided meditation on this second day of Christmas. Here, in the quiet and intimacy of this chapel, we prepare ourselves to encounter the Good God.

I sit as comfortably as possible and take several deep breaths. I may choose to close my eyes as I breathe out slowly.

Theme:

God enters our human history by becoming human himself:

He binds himself to us inseparably.

My desire for this time of prayer:

I desire to come to understand what this incarnation means for the world, for the people I know, and for myself.

I desire to come to know Jesus more deeply, in order to love him more and to follow him.

Music: Little Drummer Boy (Carol of the Drum), The Anita Kerr Singers

Come, they told me

A newborn King to see

Our finest gifts we bring

To lay before the King

So to honour Him

When we come.

Little baby

I am a poor boy too

I have no gift to bring

That’s fit to give a King

Shall I play for you

On my drum?

Mary nodded

The ox and lamb kept time

I played my drum for Him

I played my best for Him

Then He smiled at me,

Me and my drum

Me and my drum

Me and my drum

Me and my drum

Luke 2: 6 - 7

While they were there, the time came for her (Mary) to give birth, and she gave birth to her firstborn son. She wrapped him in cloths and laid him in a manger, because there was no room for them at the inn.

Jesus was born vulnerable and without worldly power, in a time of turmoil and unrest. The land of Israel was under Roman occupation. Peace went hand in hand with military oppression and lack of freedom. The cruel King Herod ruled over Judea. Yet, under these circumstances, God chose to appear in the world in the human person of Jesus.

It takes little imagination to recognise similar circumstances in our own time.

*

In those days, a moving star pointed the way to the place where Jesus had been born.
What light do I follow in my life in order to come to Jesus?

*

If I follow the light, I will find Jesus.
The boy with the drum in the song had nothing more than his music to give to the incarnate God.
Do I have anything to give to God, or do I stand before him with empty hands?

*

I consider what I could give to God — do I actually truly give it?
